Shirley McWorter-Moss honors Bill Shatzer’s legacy of courage and sacrifice. Schatzer was called to active duty two months after graduating from North Central College in 1942. After being assigned to the Iowa Naval Training Station, he gained national fame for his exceptional record with Iowa Naval preflight academy’s football team. Later, he was recruited by the Detroit Lions and planned to play professionally after completing his service; however, one month after leaving for duty, he was classified as “missing in action.”
