Lean on US (2003)

This memorial for a local hero and all the innocent victims of September 11, 2001, stands tall along the banks of the DuPage River. Lean on US features a 7-foot, 2,000-pound steel beam from the World Trade Center, pieces of limestone from the Pentagon, and American black granite from Pennsylvania. A footprint of Dan Shanower – a Navy intelligence officer and Naperville native who died in the Pentagon that morning – is engraved in the granite base.

Local school children created drawings that the artist later cast to make The Wall of Faces – a 48-foot-long concrete backdrop featuring 130 individuals of all ages, remembering all who died on this tragic day.
