Naperville’s Own (1996)

Naperville’s Own marks the beginning of Century Walk’s public art initiative. Created by the Chicago artist S. Michael Re, this piece commemorates the role of Naperville’s Municipal Band in the community for 150 years.

The sculpture portrays six musicians and their instruments marching through time from the old “gazebo” that housed band performances from the 1890s until 1926 towards the newer band shell where performances were held until 1999.

This journey through musical and social history reflects the ultimate inclusion of women in the formerly male-only ensemble honoring the role of music in bringing the community together and stimulating social change.
