Be the Best that You can Be (2002)

Emanuel Martinez, an influential contributor to the Chicano Movement, pictures the 1936 Naperville High School basketball captain, William “Billy” Scherer, as he attempts a free throw.

Scherer’s motto was “Be the best that you can be.” He warned his children that, in life, there will always be someone better, but he implored them not to let this dissuade them from achieving their potential. This sculpture near the Athletic Plaza at Naperville Central High School memorializes Billy Scherer’s philosophy of humility and tenacity.
