Spirit of the ‘Y’ (2010)

This bronze sculpture celebrates 100 years of the YMCA. Four children dance to the 1978 pop song of the same name. The children are depicted in a progression of fashion and hairstyles from early 1900s attire to 1960s bell-bottom pants and more recent sportswear, which represent the past 100 years of the organization. The community spirit and volunteerism that defines Naperville today took root 100 years ago when a group of determined townspeople organized and raised over $26,000 in just 15 days to build the first local YMCA building in 1910.
